Description

The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is a unique federation of voluntary health organizations dedicated to helping people with rare "orphan" diseases and assisting the organizations that serve them. NORD is committed to the identification, treatment, and cure of rare disorders through programs of education, advocacy, research and service. It is a clearinghouse of information on rare diseases and provides information (reports and articles) on over 6,000 rare (orphan) diseases and a newsletter to members. First-time telephone and mail inquirers may receive one disease report at no charge. Additional reports are available for $7.50 each to help cover printing and mailing costs. Individuals may also join NORD as members to network with other patients and their families. Individual basic membership fee is $30 per year. In addition, NORD also operates two patient assistance programs for medication for those eligible. One pays a percentage of medication expense for up to one year and can re-apply annually; the other is for free medication. Provides referrals to support groups.
